I was watching TV the other day and was surprised to see that Facebook has now found it's way into TV commercials. The newest (as far as I know) Bud Light commercial shows a couple driving down the highway and two situations one where the guy just get's rejected. The second scenario is when she simply just throws him out of the moving car. After he get's up he screams "I'll friend you!" And then the Bud Light tagline "It's all about drinkability!"
What killed me was the facebook reference, the "I'll friend you!" This means that Bud Light is assuming enough people know what that means that they are using it as a marketing scheme in their commercial. It's just crazy how in only 5 or 6 years facebook has gotten to the point where it is like a formal accepted well known means of communication similar to email or instant messenger.
I've since started calling Facebook the "Target" of the internet, as Myspace is the "Walmart." But you're right, it definitely seems that Facebook would like to be seen as essentially the first and last resource for information online. And the fact that third party entities like Bud Light are jumping on that bandwagon, the site seems to have dug its heels into the collective conscious pretty solidly for the time being. However, As the internet is fickle and Facebook, like others, is struggling to turn a profit, its popularity will most likely burn out eventually.
ReplyDeleteI have to say that I am hooked to Facebook; if I'm bored, I find myself surfing through pages and pages of Facebook, providing me with senseless entertainment. However, I have to say that I miss the old old Facebook; the Facebook that once was when I first entered college 4 years ago. Back then Facebook, was strictly for only college students and there was no applications and such. Just pictures, wall posts, and pokes. I miss those days because it made Facebook unique, but it is now available to everyone and I do not enjoy that. Facebook has clearly jumped the shark and it has no intentions of every jumping back on.
